Our Mission: The mission of Como Northtown Community Credit Union is to help our membership improve its financial well being.
What Is a Credit Union? Credit Unions are member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperatives. This is what distinguishes the Credit Union from other financial institutions.
Members help members by pooling their money, which is then available to lend to their fellow members. Credit Union income, after expenses and reserves, is returned directly to members in the form of lower rates on loans, higher dividends on savings and many no-fee services. Every primary member has a vote for the credit union's Board of Directors, regardless of how much he or she has on deposit. There is no select group of shareholders or owners that profits more than anyone else. All members profit, individually and collectively.
More than 80 million Americans belong to Credit Unions. Research shows that consumers are more satisfied with Credit Unions than with any other financial service providers.
Your Savings Are Secure You can feel safe knowing that your savings are insured up to $100,000 by the National Credit Union Administration, an agency of the United States Government.
Lifetime and Family Membership You can enjoy lifetime membership with Como Northtown Community Credit Union because our policy is "once a member, always a member". If you should change jobs, retire, or move, you can maintain your membership and continue to participate in the many convenient and great rate services available to you. Family members and other blood or adoptive relatives are also eligible to enjoy the benefits and privileges of credit union membership.
How it all Began Como Northtown Community Credit Union was founded on February 21, 1940 by a group of eight employee volunteers from the Northern Pacific Railroad, located at Como Shops, which now houses Bandana Square. The Superintendent of Como Shops arranged a meeting of ninety plus employees who were interested in forming a "common bond" for the purpose of promoting thrift and providing credit to its members. This has been the philosophy behind credit unions for years, and remains the goal of Como Northtown to this day.
In 1986, the Board of Directors petitioned the Commerce Department of the State of Minnesota to allow them to expand their Credit Union Charter to include the people who live or work in the Como/Midway area of St. Paul. The petition was granted, and today Como Northtown Community Credit Union is a full service financial institution providing a wide spectrum of services to well over 8,000 members.
